District No. 27 was a rural one-room schoolhouse built in the late 1800s. It was originally located south of Indianola. With the help of local carpenter Tom Manker, the late Griff Malleck rescued and restored the building to showcase its former glory and keep history alive.

District No. 27 has been re-located twice. First, to the Malleck farmstead, where it was renovated and displayed during the annual Bum Malleck Memorial threshing. And finally, in March of 2025, it was moved to where it sits today, at the corner of Highway 6&34 and Main Street in downtown Indianola, Nebraska.

In its current location, the building has been used to host art shows and painting classes. The Indianola Historical Society hopes to someday host field trips to the location, where students can get a glimpse of what it was like being a student in the frontiers of Nebraska.
